The last of the 12 installments, only seems like yesterday i started this ;)
2nd September 1906 - The air temperature reached 35.6c (96.0f) in Barnet, Herts, Epsom, Surrey and Bawtry, West Yorkshire.
5th September 1958 - The heaviest hailstone ever recorded in Britain fell at Horsham, Sussex at 6pm. It was 6.5 ounces and the size of a grapefruit. Small pits were left in lawns where the hailstones had fallen. Around 10,000 bushels of apples were destroyed, and those left on trees were all hail pitted.
13th September 2005 - The remnants of tropical storms ‘Maria’ and ‘Nate’ were queuing up to bring some very wet weather to NW Scotland and the Western Isles and later going on to affect western Scandinavia.
15th September 1968 - In Guildford the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre was flooded to a depth of 1 metre and the Millbrook shopping centre to a depth of 2.5 metres.
16th September 1976 - The remnants of hurricane Flossie gave gusts up to 104mph over northern Scotland.
16th/17th September 1961 - The remnants of hurricane Debbie crossed NW Ireland, which brought severe gales to both Ireland and into western and northern parts of Scotland. As Debbie moved rapidly north-east, unusually it maintained its true tropical characteristics until just before it hit Ireland.
17th September 1954 - The Cairngorms were covered in snow down to 760 metres. During the year of the drought and heatwave of 1976, some snow managed to linger through the usually critical time of September on the Cairngorms.
20th September 1919 - Earliest known time of year for widespread snow to fall in Britain.
26th September 1950 - A blue moon was seen over Britain. The cause was a forest fire in Alberta, Canada. Drifting smoke with just the right size of particles was able to scatter away the red part of the white reflected sunlight from the moon, while allowing the blue part to pass without interruption. Particles of that size are rarely present in the night sky - just 'once in a blue moon'.
26th September 1971 - A tornado moved a 90 ton train 46 metres along it's track at Rotherham, Yorkshire.
