Here is a fantastic link to show you what can be seen in the sky at any given time from any given place. Your Sky

Use the "skymap" and customise it to your location using lat/long (available from multimap or similar) and you are away. The choose your view to show planets, constellations, names etc :icon_excl

Yes this sky map is very good... the only problem is that there can be too much detail and you cant see the wood for the trees... but for a freebie its very good.

Great site, Thanks very much tamworth weather, but I think frederick is right, there is too much detail it should just show cloud - excuse my cynical sense of humour but how much longer before we get a really decent night. Happy observing to all, regards.

    Hi,

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but there are a couple of free downloads that will give a very nice indication what you may see above your horizon on a clear night (In the UK - Yea Right!)

    Stellarium

    WorldWide Telescope

Use the "Heavens Above" website to find your Lat/Long.

    Enjoy.

    Just discovered this Stellarium program.
It came to me as a program on a 'free' dvd disc with a magazine.

I thought it would be a game, but
it is a genuine scientific program.

Have a close-up view of saturns rings, or watch the sun set.

You can download it for free from here: http://www.stellarium.org/

It is actually useful for giving names to the stars you can see.

    Location:
    Dudley, West Midlands, UK
It's all black text on a purple background - I can't see what I'm doing (It's downloading 5 modules worth of star catalogues)

Am I missing something in set up ?

I have used Stellarium constantly. It is a great, open source program that (in my experience) runs better on Windows XP than on Linux.
My only quibble is that I have to run it at 800 x 600 on this machine, otherwise it seems to "hiccup".:icon_cry:
